Kari grew up in Seattle, but her roots run deep in Skagit County, where her great-grandmother raised two generations on a Mount Vernon farm. A graduate of Western Washington University, Kari began her journalism career covering small towns and Native communities for weekly newspapers in Kitsap County and the daily Bellingham Herald. She later joined the digital team at the Seattle Times before spending two decades in the tech industry. Throughout her career, Kari has remained dedicated to journalism, serving as a 30-year member of the Asian American Journalists Association and a former national board member of the Journalism and Women Symposium. Now, Kari is bringing her passion back to local news with a vision to build a newspaper that truly reflects the La Conner and Swinomish tribal communities, supports its newsroom with living wages, and stands the test of time.
